The Town of Fogo Island is now part of the Recycle My Cell program
Most of us have owned on average three or four cell phones prior to our current one. That means that a lot of us likely have a slew of old devices that are either getting hidden away in junk drawers or disposed of incorrectly.

The Town of Fogo Island is considering enrolling in the MMSB's backyard composting program. This program allows residents to purchase compost bins from the Town for $21.99 plus HST (similar bins cost ~$70 retail). If you are interested in purchasing a bin, please call, email or drop into the Town Office and let us know.

HOW TO KNOW IN FOGO

From building a boat (known locally as a "punt"), to assembling a quilt, baking a partridgeberry lassie tarte, or tying nautical knots, the folks who live on Fogo Island -- off the stormy northeast coast of Newfoundland -- have created a body of local knowledge in order to survive.

Artist and academic Pam Hall, who recently collaborated with island residents to produce An Encyclopedia of Local Knowledge on Fogo, shares the results of her research.

Central Newfoundland Waste Management (CNWM) is pleased to announce Sort It - Central, a new curbside recycling and garbage collection program that will launch on Monday, March 2, 2015.

With a focus on increasing waste diversion and protecting the environment, Sort It - Central requires everyone to properly sort their waste into two streams, using clear bags for garbage and transparent blue bags for recyclables, including paper fibre and mixed containers.

The first of its kind in Newfoundland and Labrador, our mandatory program will have the greatest positive impact on keeping waste out of the central regional landfill.

The Town of Fogo Island would like to remind residents that a permit is required for:
• New construction
• Extensions to buildings
• Demolition
• Exterior renovations (new windows, door's, siding, roofing, shingles, decks, footings, etc.)
• Repairs and maintenance
• Fencing
• Relocation of buildings
• Alterations to land, including hard surfacing, landscaping, excavating, ditching, depositing fill and the clearing of land.
• Installation of septic systems

Residents are also reminded that a permit must be obtained prior to the commencement of any work.

A certain irresponsible segment of society continues to ignore the environment and litters and dumps their garbage anywhere they feel like it.

All of us pay a price for these irresponsible acts. The scenery is spoiled, visitors are turned off by the mess, and rodents and other scavengers are attracted by the refuse.

Through regional co-operation with other Councils and with the support of the Provincial Government, our trash is now transported off our Island for proper disposal.

Don't let a few spoil our environment. Use the proper disposal facility for all your garbage.

Report anyone you see dumping illegally.
